Campione d’Italia has a fascinating and layered history — not only as an Italian enclave within the Swiss canton of Ticino, but also as a discreet center of intelligence and intrigue during the turbulent 20th century.
In 1917, during World War I, the Casino di Campione was founded not merely for entertainment, but as a front for Italian intelligence operations. The Italian government used it to attract foreign diplomats and gather information in a neutral environment.
During Mussolini’s regime, the casino was reopened and played a significant political role, serving as a symbolic outpost of fascist influence.
One famous episode involved Cesare Rossi, an opponent of Mussolini, who fled to Switzerland. He was lured back across the border to Campione by a woman secretly working for Mussolini — and arrested the moment he stepped back onto Italian soil.
These episodes of espionage and diplomacy give Campione a mysterious allure — a place where history quietly shaped the present.
Campione enjoys a unique fiscal status within Europe. As Italian territory closely linked to Switzerland, it offers distinct advantages for residents and companies alike. Discretion, stability, and international credibility make Campione one of the most desirable locations for investors and private individuals seeking an elegant and secure base. Its tradition of privacy — once born from its strategic position — has evolved into a refined culture of exclusivity.
A touch of cinematic romance: On the shores of Lake Lugano — near Campione — legendary French actor Alain Delon and Austrian icon Romy Schneider became engaged in March 1959, at the home of Schneider’s parents. Their engagement remains one of the region’s most charming and glamorous stories — a symbol of love, beauty, and timeless allure, much like Campione itself.
